This article discusses the thought of classical pessimist philosopher in Islamic world, it is known as Abū al-ʻAlā al-Maʻarrī (363-449 H/973-1058 AD). The main topic studied biography al-Ma'arrī and his thoughts on meaning human existence this world. To exhume data, researcher used works encyclopedia to reconstruct one monumental works, Al-Luzūmiyyāt, examine thinking. literature research uses historical analysis methods content analysis. results study are, first, background al-Ma'arrī's life, which born from a respected family with physical condition blind person who forms different although he still obtained fairly decent life. As well intellectual odyssey social conditions interacted greatly influenced thought, making himself not complain about himself, instead reflecting into philosophical ideas. Second, pessimism interpreting futility (the vanity existence). Human beings have been overwhelmed evil potential beginning. So that life also full suffering. There nothing happier than death.
